Roosevelt Island: Proposal Location Profile

“Tremendous skyline views” and “minimal crowds” are a tough combination to come by in NYC. Fortunately, Roosevelt Island typically satisfies both criteria!

Did you know Roosevelt Island is part of Manhattan? Yes, while being a different island, it technically falls under the jurisdiction of Manhattan.

Nowadays, Roosevelt Island is a mostly residential place (albeit there are a few public parks, as well as Cornell University buildings). The average tourist doesn’t come here, which makes it all the more intimate for your proposal.

Why should I propose at Roosevelt Island?

Many clients ask me about spots that can feel intimate while still showing off the NYC skyline. Not only does Roosevelt Island check these boxes, but the actual skyline views are remarkable due to how close you actually are to the buildings.

How do I get there?

This is the fun part. Getting onto Roosevelt Island by car isn’t all that easy (the only road onto the island is via a bridge from Astoria, Queens). There are, however, a multitude of other ways to get here, two of which I believe really enhance the day’s experience.

  • Tram - probably the most unique mode of transportation still in existence in NYC. Learn more here.

  • Ferry - the Astoria Ferry route has a stop on the east side of the island.

  • Subway - take the F train to Roosevelt Island (only one stop from midtown Manhattan).

Where should I propose?

My favorite area is the western riverfront right near the Smallpox Hospital ruins (yes, there is an abandoned Smallpox Hospital here). This section of the island is roughly equivalent to 51-54 Streets in Manhattan. Panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline are aplenty over here, and you have the added bonus of being right near the entrance to Four Freedoms State Park.

What time should I propose here?

1-1.5 hours before that day’s scheduled sunset. This will generally give you the best opportunity to have excellent warm light for the majority of your photoshoot.

Special Considerations:

  • Four Freedoms State Park closes at 5pm ET, and is not open on Tuesday’s.

  • Roosevelt Island’s cherry blossoms are a major attraction in the spring, so expect lots of crowds that time of year. If you would like a more intimate experience, you won’t get that here during the spring unless you come at off-peak hours.

Sounds great - let’s book a shoot!

I’d love the opportunity to help plan and photograph your proposal. Please feel free to submit your inquiry here.
