Proposing at the Central Park Reservoir Skyline Viewpoint (NYC)

Finding a proposal spot in Central Park that offers both sweeping skyline views and a sense of privacy is somewhat of a challenge. Often, those spots that showcase the skyline can be far from intimate.

Enter Central Park Reservoir Skyline Viewpoint (that’s not an official name - it’s just what I call it). Let’s talk about why this is easily one of my favorite proposal locations in the city!

What’s special about the Central Park Reservoir Skyline Viewpoint?

This spot offers panoramic views of the Midtown Manhattan skyline (and even One World Trade Center way off in the distance if you know where to look). It is also located in a section of Central Park that doesn’t see heavy tourist traffic, which allows for a more intimate experience than other skyline-focused spots. It’s a real local’s gem.

It’s also in a beautiful area of the park, with nearby landmarks such as the Gothic Bridge and El Dorado apartment building providing for amazing photo opportunities. If you’re here at the right time in the spring, you’re also right near one of Central Park’s best cherry blossom hotspots.

How do I get there?

That depends on where you’re entering the park:

  • West 93rd Street and Central Park West - 10 min walk

  • East 97th Street and 5th Ave - 10 min walk

  • East 90th Street and 5th Ave (Engineer’s Gate) - 15 min walk

The viewpoint itself (located here) is on a section of grass between the Bridle Path and Shuman Running Track, and is slightly east of the Gothic Bridge and tennis courts.

What times offer the best lighting?

I usually recommend this spot either two hours after sunrise, or two hours before sunset - so that will be dependent on the time of year.

I do not recommend this spot in midday lighting, as the sun will be very harsh.

What if it rains?

Rain or bad weather can actually have a negative impact on this spot by obscuring skyline visibility. In such a scenario, I would recommend shifting your proposal location to the Gothic Bridge, which is quite literally a 45-second walk from the Central Park Reservoir Skyline Viewpoint.

Sounds like a beautiful proposal location. How can I book a shoot?

Please submit your inquiry here. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
