Proposing at Cedar Hill (Central Park, NYC)

Just south of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) is Central Park’s Cedar Hill, a sloping lawn that is equal parts intimidating as it is beautiful.

Cedar Hill is best known as a sledder’s paradise - as a born-and-raised New Yorker, I can vouch for it being the best place to go after it snows.

In the warmer months, it’s a grassy lawn where people can picnic and enjoy the views of 5th Avenue and the greater Upper East Side.

Thinking of proposing here? Here’s what you should know:

What makes Cedar Hill a good proposal spot?

Cedar Hill is the quintessential Central Park location, showcasing the park’s greenery and foliage. Compared to other sites, Cedar Hill is relatively quiet, providing a truly intimate experience. Being so close to the MET also gives a great cover story to help keep the proposal a surprise.

Cedar Hill is a big area. Anywhere specifically that I should propose?

There’s a small flat tree-covered area towards the top of the hill (specifically near a modest bench). If you’re getting your proposal photographed, the trees here create an excellent visual frame.

What time should I propose?

The morning will provide the best lighting, especially the 30-60 minutes after sunrise. If that’s too early, you can likely get away with doing something a bit later in the morning. However, be aware that Cedar Hill can get busy on a nice spring or summer day.

Any other considerations for this spot?

As with many of the grassy areas in Central Park, Cedar Hill will mostly be closed off between mid-November and late Spring - so keep this in mind when planning your proposal.

How can I get to Cedar Hill?

Your closest bet will be to enter the park at East 79th Street and 5th Avenue. The hill is in full view within seconds.

Cedar Hill looks like a great option. How can I book a proposal shoot?
