Proposing in DUMBO (Brooklyn)
Whether it’s the unmatched skyline views or the multiple vantage points of both the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge, DUMBO offers the ideal backdrop for a picture-perfect NYC proposal.
Short for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”, DUMBO is exactly just that - a Brooklyn neighborhood located between the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge (though it technically extends a few blocks north of the Manhattan Bridge, too).
When it comes to proposals, DUMBO requires a bit of extra planning to get the timing, location, and logistics just right. Here’s everything you need to know, including timing tips and my favorite spots.
Just how crowded is DUMBO actually?
Let’s address the elephant (pun intended) in the room - DUMBO is one of the most popular tourist destinations in NYC. It can get very crowded, which isn’t ideal if you’re expecting an intimate proposal experience.
Crowds are very location-dependent and time-dependent. The largest crowds will gather around Washington Street, Pebble Beach, Timeout Market, and Jane’s Carousel. That’s a decent chunk of the neighborhood, but there are still many other awesome spots just nearby that provide a relatively intimate experience.
Timing-wise, crowds start to pour in around 9 AM, and it gets packed at sunset (especially at Pebble Beach). If you expect an intimate experience and your heart is set on one of those popular spots, I absolutely recommend getting here no later than 30-45 minutes after sunrise.
What’s the best time to propose in DUMBO?
This depends on your vision for the proposal.
For flattering warm golden hour lighting, it’s best to come here about an hour before sunset. However, the trade off is larger crowds.
For a more intimate experience, try coming here in the early morning after sunrise.
Where should I propose in DUMBO?
There are so many great spots to choose from. These are some of my favorites:
Emily Warren Roebling Plaza/Empire Fulton Ferry
This small stretch of boardwalk between Jane’s Carousel and the Brooklyn Bridge offers incredible romantic scenery for your big moment. Keep in mind that this is a pretty popular spot for other photoshoots, and don’t be surprised if you see a big ‘Marry Me’ setup in that one corner.
John Street Park
This small gravel area can be found just north of the Manhattan Bridge, and is my personal favorite for intimate proposal experiences in DUMBO. This spot doesn’t get even remotely the amount of foot traffic that the rest of DUMBO sees, but the views are arguably the best in the area. Here, you’ll find both the skyline and Brooklyn Bridge magnificently framed by the Manhattan Bridge.
Jane’s Carousel
This spot serves as a charming backdrop for your photos, whether it’s the carousel’s light fixtures, or the jaw-dropping skyline views.
Pebble Beach
Panoramic views of the skyline with a special emphasis on the Brooklyn Bridge is what makes this spot so iconic. However, with those views come intense crowds. Post-proposal photos around sunset may be in order for this location - otherwise, I would definitely recommend an early morning proposal here.
Directly Beneath the Brooklyn Bridge
For a unique perspective of one of the world’s most recognizable bridges, consider popping the question with the Brooklyn Bridge looming high above you both.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade
For those epic city views with relatively minimal crowds, head over to Brooklyn Heights Promenade, just a quick walk from the DUMBO area. It’s also directly above Brooklyn Bridge Park, plus you have the added bonus of being in one of the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods - Brooklyn Heights.
Washington Street
Here’s the deal - if you want any sort of privacy, Washington Street is the last place you should consider. This street, which features prominent views of the Manhattan Bridge, might just be the most popular site in DUMBO. It’s still beautiful and a worthy photo spot - I would recommend taking your photos closer to Plymouth Street (rather than Water Street) to ensure there are fewer people in the background. Do also remember that this street is an active roadway, meaning drivers might not be as lenient when it comes to waiting for your special moment to take place.
Other spots:
Brooklyn Bridge Park
Manhattan Bridge Lookout
DUMBO Ferry Landing
And so on…
